No.1 Overall MLB Draft Pick Paul Skenes Marks Fourth #1 selection out of the Boras Classic


Ahead of the Tournament’s 12th year the Classic boasts more than 43 MLB Draftees in the 2023 class with 87 Division l players joining the single elimination bracket this Spring

 

Newport Beach, Calif., January 8, 2024 – The Boras Family Foundation today announced the 16 teams competing in the 2024 Northern Section of the Boras Baseball Classic of California, hosted March 25-28, 2024, with host Oak Ridge High School.

Cardinal Newman to defend their 2023 Northern Section and State Championship title.

This is a testament to our mission of providing a platform for these young athletes showcasing their skills as they pursue their next level in their careers. The collegiate coaches from around the country remain dedicated to the players in the tournament demonstrating another marker in our commitment to providing access and opportunity.”

The 2024 Northern Section Classic is host to:

  • One State Champion in Central Catholic
  • Three MaxPreps All-State Recognitions with Nic Abraham, Franklin (1st Team, UTIL), pitcher Mason Brassfield, Bakersfield Christian (2nd Team) TP Wentworth, Central Catholic (3rd Team, UTIL)
  • Four MaxPreps State Rankings #7 Cardinal Newman, #11 Franklin, #19 Whitney and #20 Archbishop Mitty
  • Four Returning League MVP/Pitcher of the Year: Austin Steeves, Casa Grande (MVP, Co-Pitcher of the Year) Vine Valley League, Michael Quedens, St. Mary’s (Co-MVP) Tri-City League, Tanner Grove, St. Mary’s (Most Valuable Pitcher) Tri-City League, and Austin Nye, Woodcreek (MVP) Capital Valley League
  • Seven 2023 Section Champions: Bakersfield Christian (Central D-II), Bellarmine College Prep (Central Coast D-II), Franklin (Sac-Joaquin D-I), Granite Bay (Sac-Joaquin D-II), Central Catholic (Sac-Joaquin D-III), Casa Grande (North Coast D-II), and Cardinal Newman (North Coast D-III)
  • 10 Perfect Game Top 250 Nationally ranked players for the 2024- 2026 classes
  • 15 – 2023 Area Code Games participants

Two new teams join the Northern Section with 2023 Central League Division ll Champions Bakersfield Christian and Central Catholic led by Clemson commit TP Wentworth (’24).   

Returning to the Classic alongside hosts Oak Ridge led by senior pitcher Brady Rae are defending Boras Classic Champions and 2023 North Coast Section Division lll Champions Cardinal Newman (28-2), 2023 runners up Bellarmine College Prep (21-13), West Coast League’s Archbishop Mitty (21-8), North Coast Division ll Champions Casa Grande (25-6), Sac-Joaquin Section Division l Champions Franklin (30-5), Granite Bay (15-9) with Division l commits Peter Caldera (’24, Sacramento State) and Chase Bentley (’25, Texas A&M).   

Marin Catholic (20-7), Palo Alto (13-13), and Rocklin (14-16) all return along with senior led Serra with Joseph Damelio (Pepperdine) and Jake Downing (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). St. Mary’s (24-8) brings a pair of dominant arms in Michael Quedens and Tanner Grove, Whitney (26-9) with three 1st Team All-League hitters and leading for Woodcreek (22-10) is Capital Valley League MVP Austin Nye (’24, Vanderbilt).

The 16 high school teams participating in the North Classic are guaranteed four games, with the championship game slated for March 28th, 7 p.m. A de-facto State Title game will take place in April 2024.
