Mira Costa Baseball Returns to Reclaim Their Title in 2019


The nearly undefeated Mustangs return to the Classic after a one year hiatus to compete for the coveted Boras Classic Title along with five new teams joining the Tournament

December 10, 2018—The Boras Foundation today announced the 16 teams competing in the 2019 Boras Baseball Classic Southern Section.  

The Boras Classic will feature 32-elite teams from California to name a de-facto State Championship team. Games begin March 26, 2019 at host schools JSerra Catholic and Mater Dei High Schools.

“By far the most loaded field of teams to date, the Spring Tournament will feature some of the best teams in Southern California,” said Scott Boras, Director of The Boras Family Foundation. “With the addition of five new teams and strong returners we are proud to provide a platform for the best players in the state to showcase their skill set to further their education and baseball careers.”

The 2019 Classic is host to:

    • Reigning Boras Classic champions JSerra Catholic in the South and Bellarmine Prep in the North
    • 18 League Championship teams in 2018
    • Six nationally ranked teams in 2018
    • Over 110 Division 1 commits

Returning hopefuls to reclaim their Boras Classic Title are the back-to-back Bay League Champions, Mira Costa Mustangs. Finishing their 2018 season with a 28-4 record the Mustangs bring seven D1 commits in players like Kyle Karros (3B, UCLA), Chase Meidroth (SS, San Diego) and Christian Bodlovich (RHP, Arizona State)

The Southern section brings five new teams to the Classic including Empire League Champions Cypress High School, featuring six D1 commits, four State ranked players and home to Angels outfielder David Fletcher. 

Other newcomers include Ayala High School and its five D1 commits including seniors Joseph Naranjo (1B, Fullerton), Dylan Cook (Utah Valley) and juniors Jacob Johnston (Towson) and Sean McLeod (St. Mary’s). Back-to-back Big League Vlll Champions Corona join, along with #27 ranked Marantha who feature six D1 commits, Rancho Bernardo and Yucaipa with eight D1 commits and ranked #16 in the country also joins the ranks of the elite teams to be invited to the 2019 Southern Section Classic.

Top powerhouse teams returning to the Classic are #9 ranked and two-time Sunset League Champions Huntington Beach with seven D1 commits including #23 ranked Josh Hann (LHP, UCLA), Brett Barrera (SS, Stanford) and Jake Vogel (OF, UCLA).      

Returning to the Classic are back-to-back Baseline League Champions Etiwanda High School, with #18 state ranked senior Cody Freeman (SS, Baylor) and Great Oak with D1 commits Josh Paino (SS, St. Mary’s) and Zach Arnold (SS, Oregon). Also returning with a roster of accomplishments are ranked #17 in the country, La Mirada, featuring six D1 commits in Darius Perry (C, UCLA), Jared Jones (RHP, USC) and Emilio Morales (C, USC).

Other returners include Notre Dame with six D1 commits and three top ranked athletes, #2 ranked Orange Lutheran featuring 10 D1 commits and five top ranked athletes and 2018 Coastal Canyon League Champions Simi Valley with three D1 commits and home to star MLB pitchers Jared and Jeff Weaver.

Co-hosts and reigning Boras Classic Southern Section Champions, return four-time Trinity League Champions JSerra Catholic featuring seven D1 commits including #22 ranked Michael Currialle (SS, UCLA), Hunter Cranton (RHP, Arizona), Andrew Miller (RHP, Nevada), and Blake Klassen (1B, Arizona) and Cody Schrier (SS, USC). 

Co-host, Mater Dei returns #21 ranked right-handed pitcher Hunter Cope (Arizona), CJ Rodriguez (C, Vanderbilt), Cameron Wheeler (RHP, UC Irvine), Kyle Scott (RHP, Cal Poly), Joey Nicolai (1B, San Diego) and #4 ranked sophomore Alonzo Tredwell (P/1B, UCLA).

The 16 high school teams participating in the Classic are guaranteed a minimum of four games with the championship game slated for March 29th, at 6 p.m. hosted by JSerra Catholic High School.
